Your Hotel Le Mans Country Club offers an invitation to rest and relax in the heart of the countryside close to Le Mans. During your stay, however, don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit Le Mans, just 10 minutes away, and discover its exceptional historical and architectural heritage of which the Cathedral of Saint-Julien is the most outstanding example.

The Cathedral of Saint-Julien; a masterpiece

The current building was erected on the foundations of an earlier cathedral thought to date from the 4th or 5th centuries. It was begun around 1060 and construction went on until the 15th century. Built in the beautiful stone found in the area, roussard and limestone, it incorporated medieval techniques and became the most successful example of Angevin Gothic architecture. The transition from the Romanesque is still perceptible in the nave. The result is a sumptuous building, illuminated through stone lacework and recently restored period windows.

A treasure of Le Mans

The Cathedral of Saint-Julien, in all its elegance and majesty, dominates Le Mans, rising 64 metres above the city’s streets. It is part of the perfectly preserved architectural heritage of the Cité Plantagenêt, the old centre of Le Mans, characterised by its medieval and Renaissance-era buildings. You can take a guided tour to learn all its secrets or just explore at your own pace to fully appreciate the majesty and serenity of this exquisite place of worship. In summer, don’t miss the Night of the Chimeras, an audio-visual show projected on the cathedral’s superb facade.

The Cathedral of Saint-Julien is a true treasure of Le Mans that will soon be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Please don’t hesitate to ask the Hotel Le Mans Country Club team to help you arrange your visit.
