A place to discover; the Cité Plantagenêt in the heart of old Le Mans
You’ve probably already seen it without being aware of it. The Cité Plantagenêt, the oldest part of the town of Le Mans, has been the setting for many swashbuckling films set in the colourful past. With its cobbled alleyways, Gallo-Roman walls, Renaissance-era buildings of pale stone and timber-framed houses, it seems frozen in time. Only about fifteen minutes from the Hotel Le Mans Country Club, this fascinating district should not be missed!
Old Le Mans and its Cité Plantagenêt
A charming city on the confluence of the Sarthe and Huisne rivers, between Normandy and the Pays de la Loire region, Le Mans boasts an amazing heritage that earned it the label City of Art and History and a candidacy for a UNESCO World Heritage Site classification. The 20 perfectly preserved hectares of the Cité Plantagenêt provide a fascinating glimpse into yesteryear. From Roman remains and medieval streets to beautiful Renaissance houses and prestigious monuments, this place breathes history and is well worth exploring.
A place of wonders
In addition to the Gallo-Roman walls and mosaics dating from ancient times, the Cité Plantagenêt has treasures such as the Cathedral of Saint-Julien, a superb example of the Gothic Angevin or Plantagenet style of architecture, built over three centuries. There is also the Palais des Comtes du Maine, once a Plantagenet family home that evolved throughout the 10th to the 15th centuries. Finally, more discreet but equally exciting, there are a thousand little architectural and artistic details that will catch your eye during your walk, guided or otherwise, within the City. The flower-filled gardens, mullioned windows and romantic quays are truly delightful.
Your stay at the Mans Country Club is an opportunity to discover one of the region’s historical jewels; the Cité Plantagenêt. Whether you simply enjoy a relaxing stroll through its streets or view it with a connoisseur's eye, you will always be captivated by its charms!
